Film former, stabilizer, thickener and suspending agent in ointments, creams & lotions. It works as a gelling agent and protective colloid in jellies & salves. Also acts as a thickener and suspending aid in syrups & suspensions. It serves as an inert water-binding agent for bulk laxatives.
