Ever-Adaptive Beauty: Rethinking Beauty in a Changing World

Published on March 25, 2026

The beauty industry has always evolved alongside society. But today, the pace of change is accelerating. Climate shifts, demographic transformations, new lifestyle patterns and resources availability are reshaping how people care for their skin and hair around the world.

At In-Cosmetics 2026, Safic-Alcan explores this transformation through the theme “Ever-Adaptive Beauty”. Developed in collaboration with our ESG (Environmental, Social & Governance) department, this concept examines how environmental and social changes and evolving consumer expectations could shape the future of cosmetic innovation.

Understanding Adaptive Beauty

To better understand this shift, we spoke with Pauline CHARY, Global ESG Manager and Solène HEMAR, ESG Project Manager, at Safic-Alcan, about the role of sustainability in cosmetic innovation and the thinking behind the five future beauty personas developed for this initiative.

Why do we talk about “Adaptive Beauty”?

Solène: As global temperature rises (the +1.5°C threshold was crossed in 2024), climate change is redrawing the map of skin and hair needs.

New region-specific stressors are emerging and will intensify, as humidity becomes more erratic, UV exposure increases, heat waves spread, and pollution peaks intensify; water stress is becoming a reality in regions where had never been a concern before.

These changes not only affect comfort, but they also fundamentally alter the needs of skin and hair to remain healthy. Research has already demonstrated clear links between climate factors and skin barrier disruption, inflammation, oxidative stress, microbiome imbalance, and premature aging. [1]

At the same time, demographic and social trends are reshaping demand. Aging populations in some regions, rapid urbanization in others, and increasingly diverse consumer profiles: all these factors call for more personalized, context-specific formulations rather than universal solutions.

Adaptive beauty is not only about formulation. It also takes into account the entire product lifecycle through eco-design: responsible sourcing of ingredients (ethical supply chains, traceability, waste recovery, or managing ingredients that may become scarce due to climate change), low-impact production processes (reducing energy consumption, limited water consumption, or minimized waste production), and end-of-life choices (packaging and recyclability).  Adaptive beauty reflects the transition made by the cosmetics industry to adapt its value chains to environmental and social constraints, while continuing to meet consumer expectations with available ingredients, designing inclusive products that are accessible to all.

How does Safic-Alcan’s ESG team support the Personal Care industry?

Pauline: At Safic-Alcan, sustainability is not a separate function, it is embedded into how we work globally.

We, the ESG team, work alongside the Personal Care teams to ensure that our business strategy Integrates environmental and social impacts. We help identify the most important sustainability issues throughout our value chain and ensure that our approach evolves accordingly.

Located between suppliers and customers, Safic-Alcan occupies a privileged position as a distributor, acting as a link between the two and aligning the innovative capabilities of our suppliers with the evolving needs of our customers.

By strengthening our partnerships at both ends of our value chain, we are creating a virtuous cycle where transparency fuels better decisions, and where these better decisions drive demand for responsible innovation.

A key part of our ESG team’s work is to guide the transformation of our portfolio towards sustainability-advantaged solutions, products that deliver performance while reducing risks to human health and the environment. This transformation occurs in two ways: by working with our existing suppliers to develop more responsible and innovative solutions, and by selecting new partners who meet sustainability criteria from the outset.

How were the beauty personas defined?

Solène: Our beauty personas were defined by combining global climate science with emerging consumer insights, ensuring each persona reflects both future environmental conditions and evolving beauty expectations.

We based our personas on key climate information sources, including IPCC (The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) regional projections, to map changes in weather conditions, UV levels, pollution, heat, humidity and exposure to wildfires across global regions. We overlaid these climate insights with global beauty trends and consumer research to identify how people are adapting their routines.[2]

Across all personas, one insight stands out: consumers increasingly want multifunctional products that deliver performance while using fewer resources.

Looking Ahead: Designing Beauty for a Changing World

The concept of Ever-Adaptive Beauty reflects a key shift for the cosmetics industry: innovation must anticipate not only consumer expectations, but also environmental and social realities.

By combining sustainability insights with formulation expertise, Safic-Alcan aims to help develop products that remain relevant, responsible, and high-performing in the decades to come.

Ever-Adaptive Beauty is not about reacting to trends, but about shaping the ability to formulate for a world in constant motion.

At In-Cosmetics, this vision comes to life with innovative formulations such as ICE’N GO, our absorbing cooling cushion designed for hot and humid climates, showcased at the Sensory Bar and at our booth 3G10!
