For 175 years, Safic-Alcan has evolved alongside the global raw materials and specialty chemicals industry.
As both CEO and Head of Group M&A, and after more than 22 years within the company, I have witnessed firsthand how our people, our values, and our entrepreneurial spirit have shaped Safic-Alcan’s unique journey.
Our history is more than a timeline — it is a testimony of resilience, innovation, and strong human bonds. It reflects global political and economic shifts, industrial revolutions, wars, technological breakthroughs, and the transformations of our sector. Through it all, Safic-Alcan has been defined by its capacity to reinvent, adapt, and build meaningful, long-term partnerships.
As we celebrate our 175th anniversary, I invite you to revisit the extraordinary path that brought us here and explore how this heritage shapes our vision for the future.
Entrepreneurial Beginnings (1847): A Company Born in Uncertain Times
The roots of Safic-Alcan history trace back to 1847, when the sons of Maurice Hecht — a craftsman turned ivory broker — founded Hecht Frères et Cie, a tropical products import company. Europe was in turmoil: the 1847 financial crisis, the 1848 revolution, and widespread industrial instability made entrepreneurship an act of boldness.
Despite these challenges, the Hecht brothers persevered. Their resilience set the foundation for the company’s long-term identity: navigating uncertainty with courage, adaptability, and a global mindset. Their network extended into politics, art, and commerce, placing the company at the intersection of culture and industry.
Rubber: The Material That Transformed Our Destiny
Although the Hecht brothers originally dealt in a wide variety of natural materials, rubber soon became central to the company’s trajectory.
Rubber entered the French market in 1856. By 1858, Hecht Frères imported their first crude rubber shipment — a strategic decision that would define the next century of growth. The rise of rubber was meteoric:
- By 1864, the company made its first sale to Hutchinson, still one of our oldest clients.
- By 1870, Hecht Frères supplied 28% of France’s crude rubber consumption.
- By the 1880s, rubber had become the company’s core business.
This period also aligned with major scientific discoveries, including vulcanization by Charles Goodyear and Hancock’s patented improvements — innovations that gave rise to the rubber industry as we know it today.

Becoming Safic-Alcan: Reinvention Through Adversity
The two World Wars reshaped industries, societies, and economies. Safic-Alcan was no exception.
In 1938, after reorganizing its activities and focusing on strategic materials such as rubber, the company became:
Safic (Société Anonyme Française pour l’Importation du Caoutchouc) – Alcan
Under this new identity, the company deepened its industrial relationships and expanded its expertise in elastomers, chemicals, and specialty materials. Partnerships with pioneering companies like DuPont played a critical role in our technical evolution.
Throughout the 20th century, Safic-Alcan continuously reinvented itself — shifting from trading to distribution, navigating oil crises, diversifying its product portfolio, and redefining its market positioning. adaptation became part of our DNA.
International Expansion: Building a Global Family
The late 1980s marked a turning point with the arrival of Martial Lecat, whose strategic vision transformed Safic-Alcan into a global distribution group. With a focus on adhesives, plastics, and specialty chemicals, we expanded rapidly across Europe.
From the 1990s onward, we pursued a unique M&A approach based on:
- Human values
- Compatibility with local teams
- Long-term partnership
- Entrepreneurial culture
More than 30 successful acquisitions later, Safic-Alcan operates across the UK, Belgium, the Nordics, Eastern Europe, North America, the Maghreb, and beyond — integrating local expertise into a truly multicultural ecosystem.
A major milestone came in 2015, when employees and managers became majority shareholders. This strengthened the sense of ownership and the family spirit that still defines us today.
Sustainability: A Natural Continuation of Our Story
After decades of resilience and innovation, sustainability has emerged as a natural extension of our values.
