Why the collagen category is finally growing up

For years, "vegan collagen" was a workaround.

Brand teams knew it. Formulators definitely knew it. The vitamin C + amino acid + silica stack sold as "vegan collagen support" wasn't collagen — it was the cofactors for the collagen your body already makes. Useful biology. Dishonest label.

The consumer got the joke eventually. Returns went up. Trust went down. And the beauty-from-within category — one of the fastest-growing in nutraceuticals — kept carrying a credibility problem nobody wanted to name.

That's changing, on two fronts at once: the arrival of genuine precision-fermented vegan collagen peptides, and a much richer segmentation inside the marine category itself.

What precision fermentation actually unlocks

Collagen is absent from plants. Its building blocks are not. Modern precision fermentation takes that second fact seriously: recombinant collagen peptides, bioidentical to human Type I, produced by engineered microbes, purified to pharmaceutical-grade standards.

The result is a real ingredient, not a proxy. Neutral sensory profile. Compatible with capsules, gummies, powders, beverages, sticks. Vegan and vegetarian certifiable. No bovine spongiform concerns, no fish allergen, no marine sourcing volatility.

For brand owners, this changes the brief completely:

  • The label says "collagen" and means it.
  • The sensory profile doesn't fight the formulation.
  • The sustainability narrative is defensible without handwaving.
  • The consumer doesn't need to be educated on why the old "boosters" weren't the real thing.

That last point is where most of the category velocity will come from in 2026–27. Safic-Alcan is actively onboarding precision-fermented suppliers as this tier matures — speak to our Life Sciences team for the current state of play.

The marine range doing most of the real work today

While the vegan recombinant tier develops, the marine category has quietly become far more sophisticated than the "fish collagen peptide" of five years ago. Type I collagen — the dominant structural collagen of human skin, accounting for the majority of the dermal extracellular matrix — is also the dominant form of marine collagen, which explains the category's durability. The Safic-Alcan catalogue carries several distinct grades, each with a different brief:

  • AQUAPRO® Fish Collagen Type I Tripeptide (JXN Collagen Life Sciences) — a hydrolysed marine peptide derived from fish scales, optimised for nutraceutical applications where low molecular weight and rapid bioavailability matter. The tripeptide form is the shortest structurally meaningful collagen fragment, which has implications for absorption kinetics.
  • Fish Collagen Peptide Type II (JXN Collagen Life Sciences) — designed for nutraceuticals and dietary supplements with Type II–specific endpoints: joint, skin, bone health, and anti-inflammatory positioning. Type II is the matrix protein of cartilage and is the correct specification for joint-led product briefs.
  • Collagen HM (Copalis) — a marine polypeptide engineered for sports nutrition and skin rejuvenation. The dual positioning matters: brands building performance + recovery + beauty crossover products (an increasingly common brief) don't need two different collagens.
  • Collactive® (Copalis) — marine collagen combined with elastin oligopeptides, positioned as an antioxidant for nutraceutical applications. Elastin is the structural partner to collagen in skin, and the combination story is defensible in a way that collagen-only formulations are not.
  • Fish Collagen Peptide — the standard hydrolysed marine grade for nutraceuticals and dietary supplements, with the broadest clinical literature base for skin, joint, and bone endpoints.

Marine collagen peptides are widely reported to offer approximately 1.5-times higher absorption than land-animal sources, attributed to their smaller average peptide molecular weight. The sustainability narrative — fish by-products, circular-economy sourcing — is equally defensible. Flavour-masking is recommended in neutral matrices; the Life Sciences team supports that work.

Plant-based alternatives for the cosmetic-adjacent side of the category

Some "beauty from within" briefs are really topical-adjacent — ingredients specified for a combined ingestible and cosmetic line, or for brands that want a single botanical signature across the range. For that positioning:

  • Collagen PhytPowder 300 (Greenphyt) — an antioxidant, radiance promoter, restoring and firming agent designed for masks and body wraps, suitable for water-based formulations.
  • Carrot Collagen (Hyundai Bioland) — a moisturising agent for skin care applications, positioned as a plant-based alternative to animal collagen.

These are cosmetic-side products rather than ingestible nutraceuticals, but they're worth knowing about if your brief spans both sides of the beauty-from-within architecture.

The complement most brands under-formulate

Beauty from within isn't just collagen. Skin ageing is systemic: oxidative stress, inflammation, omega-3 status, gut health, cognitive markers. The brands winning 2026 are building stacks, not single-ingredient capsules.

DHA — the omega-3 fatty acid associated with cognitive and eye health — also matters for skin barrier function. AvailOm® High DHA Algae is the vegan-compatible format most formulators haven't built in yet: 48% DHA as free fatty acids, algae-based, directly compressible, no fishy profile.

And the gut-skin axis is no longer fringe. The 2026 microbiota stack is becoming central to any nutricosmetic brief that wants to hold up under consumer scrutiny.
